Food for the mind
We are proud to present our new little project: “Food for the mind”.
Food for the mind aims to share interesting content that generates discussion and motivates and intrigues people.
Food for the mind comes to the world with an internal initiative here at the studio. Every last week of the month we’ll grab some popcorn and drinks and watch a handpicked movie.

We are a multicultural and multidisciplinary group of highly trained graduate students from a unique and exciting environment that combines European culture and education with the American entrepreneurial spirit and know-how. As doctoral students, and given the wide diversity of skills and competencies acquired during the PhD path, we nurture the idea that it is possible to contribute positively in addressing the challenges of a knowledge society requiring multidisciplinary thinking and in the establishment of relations between business and universities to leverage their potential.”

Pedro Gomes acumula prémios internacionais. A sua última criação, a cadeira Bounce, chegará em breve ao mercado. Apesar das propostas do estrangeiro, o designer quer desenvolvê-la em Portugal.
As horas que Pedro Gomes, 27 anos, passava ao computador levaram-no a experimentar uma nova posição de trabalho: sentado numa bola pilates. A esta circunstância aliou-se a permanente vontade de criar coisas únicas e inovadoras, e assim nasceu o projeto da cadeira Bounce, que em Junho de 2012 recebeu o prémio Design and Design, mas já antes despertara a atenção do mundo do design. “O feedback do sector e das empresas à cadeira foi uma surpresa”, admite Pedro. E acrescenta: “A Bounce permite ao utilizador estar em constante movimento, mas mantendo um nível de conforto agradável e estimulante”.
Esta foi apenas uma das mais de dez distinções internacionais que o jovem designer recebeu nos últimos três anos. Entre elas destaca-se o prémio Faces of Design 2012, referente a todo o seu portfólio, o qual figurará num livro que será apresentado a 1.500 decisores nesta área. Para já, 2012 tem sido extremamente positivo. “O reconhecimento que estes prémios trazem resulta na angariação de mais clientes”, revela o jovem que fundou a empresa Pedro Gomes Design, em Aveiro. Depois de trabalhar dois anos em Munique, Alemanha, e em São Francisco, Estados Unidos, regressou a Portugal. Objetivo? “Usar o know-how e experiência que ganhei lá fora para incentivar o crescimento económico do país”, partilha. E a verdade é que não lhe faltam propostas para trabalhar no estrangeiro: chineses e indianos querem produzir a cadeira Bounce; empresários de outros países querem comercializá-la. Mas Pedro sabe o que quer: “Criar parcerias estratégicas com empresas nacionais e internacionais no desenvolvimento de soluções criativas. Aqui os clientes deixam de ser clientes e passam a ser parceiros”. E, no caso da cadeira Bounce, é taxativo: “Quero produzi-la em Portugal, com empresas portuguesas. E quero que tenha um preço acessível”. A longo prazo espera “implementar estratégias criativas em mais empresas e mostrar o valor do design enquanto ferramenta de trabalho e de inovação”. Portugal agradece.

” Decidiu regressar a Portugal numa altura em que o país estava altamente instável financeiramente. E diz que aproveitou esse periodo para “criar novos modelos de negócios”. Mas a situação económica não melhorou, pelo contrário. Tem conseguido remar contra a maré?
R: Estava não… está. Regressei somente há menos de 8 meses e o meu investimento em Portugal já tem dado resultados.
Penso que a instabilidade, é na sua essência, um motor de inovação. A agitação e violência dos mercados permite a implementação de novas mentalidades, novas maneiras de pensar!
Parte do processo de “remar” é usar a criatividade para encontrar novos caminhos. Se calhar em vez de remar contra a maré, podemos remar com a maré, mas com destinos e perspetivas diferentes?! ….”

Vejo-me como um cidadão do Mundo, de momento a morar em Aveiro. Um apaixonado por Design, de 27 anos.
